DESIGN STUDIO 2 | SECTIONED SPACES AND PLACES explores the development of a small performance space located on Burleigh Hill, on the Gold Coast. Student choose a particular performance type (dance, music, acrobatics, opera, theatre, illusion or circus) and develop a concept and design solution through the semester.

Students undertake three assessments:

  • 01 | Precedent Analysis – Students work in groups of three to develop an analysis of a provided architectural precedent. The analysis aims to to develop an understanding of architectural design development and representation, concept, context, materials and construction methods – all relating to integration of the project to a sloped site.
  • 02 | Schematic Design (Site Analysis and Concept Development) – Students undertake a site analysis, and explore the typology of performance space. They then develop a concept and initial ideas around the spatial qualities of light, proportions, scale, sound, textures, time-based activities and immersive spaces. Iterative model making and section are used.
  • 03 | Design Development – This phase focuses on development of a c ocnept into a resolved architectural design.
