DESIGN STUDIO 5 | CITY SYSTEMS explores the city and urban scale to develop a proposal for a Womens Transitional Facility in Red Hill, Queensland for women leaving the prison system and re-integrating into society – as well as replacement of the existing Salvation Army warehouse, storage and opportunity shop (op shop). The concept of Kevin Lynch’s paths, nodes, edges, landmarks, districts and infrastructure is combined with political, sociological and ecological issues to explore the project at a city and urban scale and develop a “Kit of Parts.” Students adopt planning guidelines, community needs, aspirations, and sustainable development goals to inform design decisions that encompass their proposals’ conceptual and compositional aspects.
Students undertake three assessments:
- 01 | Case Studies – Using an existing medium scale project, work in groups of 3 to 4 to analyse patterns of paths, nodes, edges, landmarks, districts and infrastructure at a city and urban scale.
- 02 | Master Plan – Analyse the paths, nodes, edges, landmarks, districts and infrastructure of the site at a city and urban scale and develop a master plan and “Kit of Parts” for the proposed project at a scale of 1:10,000 and 1:500.
- 03 | Design Development – Continue to refine the master plan based on feedback and develop the buildings at a scale of 1:500.
