DESIGN STUDIO 1 introduces students to fundamental design concepts. Students will investigate the experiential dimensions of space, its materiality and qualities in relation to the human body. They plan and design small scale proposals and explore a range of media and communication techniques.
Students undertake four assessments:
- 01 | Body Extension (groups of 3, weeks 1-3, 15%) – Use of the concept of Vitruvius’ definition of “firmitas, utilitas, venustas” to create an experimental, physical model which acts as an extension of a function of the body.
- 02 | Body and Space (groups of 3, weeks 4-6, 25%) – Transfer of the body extension into a specific spatial context. Students develop a site analysis report on 1-2,000 sq.m within the university, a storyboard and a movie
- 03 | Body and place (individual, weeks 4-6, 50%) – Development of a 20sq.m installation for a program of the students choice within a designated site adjacent to the university aquatic centre. Students use the existing conditions pavilion drawing from 1908ENG-Designer Languages as a basis for the design.
- 04 | Portfolio of Evidence (individual, weeks 4-6, 10%) – A design journal of the entire semester including lecture notes, tutorial notes, sketches, precedents, iterations and a record of the ongoing design process.
