DESIGNER LANGUAGES provides an introduction to skills required to communicate design intents and conceptual thinking. Students learn drawings skills which support conceptualising and communicating two dimensional and three-dimensional forms and spatial qualities. Students undertake a series of exercises to explore diagrams, sketching, bubble diagrams, scale and orthographic drawing (plan, section, elevation), perspective, axonometric and model-making.
Students develop three assessments:
- 01 | Existing Conditions Scale Drawing (week 1-5, 35%) – Measure up an existing pavilion and associated site context on the university campus. Dimensioned sketches are provided to assist with the process to create a series of plans, sections, elevations and perspectives. these drawings form the basis for assessment 2 in 1901ENG: Design Studio 1 | Bodies In Space.
- 02 | House Design (week 6-12, 30%) – Students are given a brief to design a small 50sq.m house on a 10m x 10m site. Scale drawings and a model are developed to communicate the design, atmosphere and context.
- 03 | Design Journal (week 1-12, 35%) – Delivery of a small portfolio of practice exercises undertaken throughout the semester to practice different skills leading up to the first two assessments.
