DESIGN STUDIO 4 | CONTEXTUAL AWARENESS is a hypothetical design project that considers the architectural aids of mental health prevention in the development of a non-normative health and well-being centre, a ‘care environment,’ in Murwillumbah, Northern NSW. Students must think beyond the current institutionalised setting of treatment and propose for spaces inspired by a wide range of typologies: a bath house, a landscape, a health centre, a sanctuary, a place of refuge, a vessel, a public room, a gallery; therefore allowing the potentials of the building to open up.
Students undertake three assessments:
- 01 | Understanding Site – Develop a thorough site analysis including diagrams, photos, and drawings as well as typological studies. Consider the site in terms of the invisible and invisible across the scales of mega (broader region), macro (local town) and micro (immediate site).
- 02 | Concept Design – Concept should be developed to consider the question – how can spaces of care be designed in non-institutional ways? The building can celebrate the idea of mental well-being in a way that actively engages with the community, the street and the town without secrecy or reluctance. Designs should be developed to include concept and initial plans, sections and perspectives.
- 03 | Design Development – A more considered, complete and detailed design proposal developed to include 1:100 building plans, elevations and sections, 1:20 detailed sections, perspectives and spatial qualities.
03 | Design Development
