TECTONICS AND PRECISION focuses on the design of a moderately complex building on the St Lucia Campus of The University of Queensland. It will combine teaching and office space while contributing to the urbanity of the campus by entering into dialogue with its surroundings. In addition, the project could create fitting places for undefined social interactions that bind the community while recognizing the imperatives of social distancing.
The brief for the building suggests a multi-storey building, but the design must recognize the opportunities offered by the site and create links between the Heart of UQ (Great Court) and our signature landscape. This building will assimilate with the UQ Master Plan and UQ Design Guidelines. It will incorporate multipurpose, active learning spaces, seminar and meeting rooms, a flexible medium-sized lecture theatre, associated support spaces, and some retail & café.
The development of this site will make a major contribution to the University’s image and showcase its commitment to creating innovative buildings that can meet the demands of a challenging future. The University is committed to commissioning buildings embodying sustainable principles and low demands on energy use. In particular, it sees this building project as an opportunity to demonstrate commitment to natural ventilation and active connection with the surrounding landscape.
Students develop the project through two assessments:
- 01 | Sketch Design, Group (weeks 1-6, 30%)
- 02 | Design Development, Individual (weeks 7-13, 70%)
