DESIGN STUDIO 2 comprises a suite of exercises of observation, analysis, proposition, and detailed design towards the siting and massing of built forms in a given physical context: Cos Zantiotis Park, Gold Coast. It focuses on concepts of physical connection and sustainable construction of landscape to foster an enhanced and resilient community in Labrador. Proposals should include three small buildings: a glasshouse, research and library and a community hub, as well as external, landscaped areas. The process moves through site analysis, strategic planning and then detailed design of a small section of the project.

Students undertake three assessments:

  • 01 | Site Selection/ Spatial Analysis (week 1-3) – Study of the landscape (hard and soft) and urban environment through the diagrammatic and sectional representation of 4 elements: space, event, movement and pattern.
  • 02 | Territory Analysis + Site Design (week 3-6) – Map existing conditions and zones across the site based on original observations of different site conditions. In response, develop an overall site strategy and plan to define territories and activities across the site. The site proposal must include 3 buildings: a glasshouse, research and library and a community hub.
  • 03 | Detailed Design (week 7-12) – Develop one part of the project in detail to include at least one building and a series of external spaces.
