COMMUNICATIONS 1 introduces students to basic tools of architectural communication. Analogue methods include collage, orthographic and perspective hand drawing, diagrams, photography and model-making Digital methods include the Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign. Learning is done through four drawing and making tasks. Each task has a series of learning tutorial exercises to learn the tools and a creative output:

  • 01 | Collage – A collage response to “Invisible Cities” by Italo Calvino.
  • 02 | Model Kit – An architectural model-making kit for a small-scale architectural design. The kit includes orthographic drawings, instructions to make the model, model photographs, and a package.
  • 03 | Drawing – Document an event, a crash, involving studio models and create a poster to present the process and the outcome of the crash.
  • 04 | Drawing Book – Containing all the drawings, exercises, tutorials, collages etc. you have undertaken throughout the semester. Different to a portfolio.

Due to online teaching in 2021, and limited access to materials, resources and group work, alternative tasks were introduced:

  • 02 (version 2) | Case Study – Documentation of an existing building to include a set of orthographic drawings, a physical model, and collage.
  • 04 (version 2) | Layout – Present the full semesters work as a portfolio.
